Why wear cycling glasses

Why I only started wearing cycling glasses after two years and why I should have done this much sooner!

For many cyclists it will be a no-brainer: are you going to hit the road? Then you wear cycling glasses. Although I fully agree with this now, it has not always been that way.
For two years I always cycled outside without cycling glasses. Never really had any problems with it. Every now and then a little fly in the eye, but you wiped it out or you didn't notice anything. This always went well for almost two cycling seasons. Until something went wrong. It was a beautiful late summer day and I was about 16 miles from home. While I was cycling quietly and unsuspectingly, a sudden gust of wind hit me in the eye. I immediately stopped because of the pain; it felt like a twig had blown into my eye.
For about 20 minutes I stood by the side of the road trying to rub the 'twig' out of my eye. I felt the looks of the groups of cyclists passing by as I stood there along the road. After endless attempts without success and with pain in my eyes from rubbing, I decided to cycle home.
When I finally arrived home after 25 km of cycling, there was of course no improvement whatsoever. I quickly went to the bathroom to hopefully remove the 'twig' from my eye with the help of a mirror. After some fiddling I managed to do this and to my surprise I discovered that it wasn't a twig at all. No, it was... (see photo)
The 'Twig'
Never again, I decided for myself. That same day I went to a nearby bike shop to buy glasses. The next day I had to try out the cycling glasses immediately, of course. I realized almost immediately how much more pleasant cycling is with cycling glasses. Besides all the bugs, it also keeps the wind out of your eyes, which kept me from constantly tearing up. Once I cycled with the glasses, I couldn't live without them!
